Key Signature

The key signature is the group of sharps or flats printed at the beginning of each line, right after the clef. It tells you which notes to play sharp or flat throughout the piece, saving the composer from writing accidentals on every single note. Always study your key signature before you start — knowing which notes are altered saves you from stumbling over surprises.
