Beam

Beams are the thick horizontal lines that connect groups of quavers and semiquavers together. They make it much easier to see rhythmic groupings at a glance, so use them to your advantage when sight-reading. If you see four notes beamed together, your brain can process them as one rhythmic unit rather than four separate events.
