Harmonic

A harmonic is an overtone that rings naturally when a string vibrates — on the piano, you can sometimes hear harmonics ringing sympathetically when you hold down the sustain pedal. Understanding harmonics helps you appreciate why certain chords sound rich and full. Listen carefully with the pedal down and you'll start to hear the piano singing back to you.
