Phrase

A phrase is a musical sentence — a complete thought that has a beginning, a high point, and an ending. Just like you'd breathe between sentences when speaking, you should shape each phrase with a slight lift or dynamic change at its boundaries. Learning to hear and play in phrases is what separates mechanical playing from truly musical performance.
