Polonaise
The polonaise is a stately Polish processional dance in 3/4 time, characterised by a distinctive rhythmic pattern — a strong downbeat followed by a short-short-long figure on beats two and three — that gives it a proud, martial character. The form has royal origins: it was danced at the Polish court as a ceremonial procession, and this nobility is audible in every bar. Chopin's polonaises, particularly the 'Heroic' Polonaise in A-flat major Op. 53, are among the most thrilling and technically demanding works in the piano repertoire, combining brilliant virtuosity with fierce patriotic emotion. When playing a polonaise, maintain a regal bearing — the characteristic rhythm must be crisp and precise, the chords resonant and full-bodied, and the tempo steady enough to imagine a grand procession moving through a ballroom.
