Polyphony

Polyphony means multiple independent voices sounding at the same time — it's the texture you find in Bach fugues and canons. Playing polyphonic music on the piano means making each voice clear and distinct, as if several singers are performing together. Practise each voice alone, then in pairs, before putting them all together; your hands need to know each line independently.
