Sostenuto

Sostenuto means 'sustained' — hold the notes for their full value and aim for a smooth, connected sound. On many pianos, the middle pedal is the sostenuto pedal, which sustains only the notes that are held down when you press it. As a playing direction, sostenuto asks you to give each note its full weight and length, creating a rich, singing tone.
