Time Signature

The time signature is the two numbers stacked at the beginning of a piece — the top number tells you how many beats per bar, and the bottom number tells you what kind of note gets one beat. For example, 3/4 means three quarter-note beats per bar (waltz time). Always check the time signature before you start playing; it's your rhythmic roadmap for the entire piece.
