Flat

A flat (♭) lowers a note by one semitone — on the piano, that usually means playing the black key immediately to the left of the natural note. When you see a flat in the key signature, it applies to every instance of that note throughout the piece unless cancelled by a natural sign. Always check your key signature at the start so those flats become second nature before you begin.
