A mordent is a quick ornament where you rapidly alternate between the written note and the note just below (or above, for an upper mordent). It adds a crisp little decoration to a note — think of it as a quick flicker of the fingers. Keep it short and snappy, making sure it doesn't disrupt the rhythmic flow of the passage.
